[ poe shakes his head back. it's time for a silent NO U argument!! he's not really worried for himself, though. he can get pinned with "what's up i'm an asshole dickin around in the office of my rival" and survive. a baby underclassman cheating is something else entirely. his name's been through a lot, he can take it, etc.

he is also considering the enemy of my enemy is my friend angle. it seems like a real risky gamble with hux (because he's the worst), but it's better than nothing. at least there are options.

but you know what, fine. let her take pictures of the test so they can be one step closer to being free of this hell. ]

[ THIS IS NOT WHERE SHE SAW THIS NIGHT GOING. She is officially the worst wingman ever /? ? Possibly the second worst. Rey's eyes go wide as she lets her phone thud to the ground. She makes a surprised noise, too, so now there's no way they're not being caught. Which is bad because the test is still on the floor.

Anyway, Rey is a Romance Connoisseur in this AU, if you forgot, so she is highly trope savvy here. She just flips that test shut and pulls Poe down with her so she can lay down on it. Yep. This is now some horizontal making out so that she's laying on top of the evidence of their bad life choices.

Hux comes around the desk around that time like —

'Mr. Dameron,' he says icily. 'Perhaps you could wait until you have earned your own office to entertain freshmen in it.'

Rey lets out a yelp like she's SO SURPRISED and then— ] Professor Hux? What are you doing here?

[ it's fine. this is fine. he wanted it to happen this way. he's gained some control over the situation. this is all according to the plan he just made up five seconds ago. he gets out from under the table to stand. ]

I've got an office. [ okay, fine, holdo let him have like a chair and some drawers in the corner of her office. nobody fuckin asked you hux. ] I just thought I'd make some memories in Ren's. I want him to think of me whenever he's in here.

[ did that sound gay? don't think about it because he's moving right along to ] Kinda weird that you're in here so late, though. What are you doing here?

[ 'That's no concern of yours,' snapped Hux. Rey doesn't want to be here for this. There's just a whole lot of testosterone and politics everywhere and she's just a freshman and this is just truly uncanny bullshit. She pushes her little drawstring bag further under the desk and in the process, nudges Poe's ribs. He needs to stop asking questions before Hux starts asking them back. ]

We didn't mean to interrupt … whatever it is you're doing. [ She glances between Hux and the laptop. He grows tense, visibly. 'Nothing.' He slammed closed out of something and slammed the laptop lid shut, turning it back around on the desk. 'Clear out.' ]

Of course, Professor Hux, sir. [ She gets to her feet and pulls Poe with her, shaking her head in the event that he looks concerned for her bag or the test. She's got this. ] We're right behind you.

[ Which forces Hux towards the door with them. ]

I don't know how often you think I do get what you're saying.

[ He's putting his bets on it being an important and very soft sentiment. And Poe trying to say that he's important to him.

There's something in there that he understands without knowing what it is, exactly. It's the story of half of what Poe says. Things he doesn't know that part of him still tries to recognize. ]

But I did notice you doing some pretty reckless, suicidal stuff. Hard to miss it.

[ whatever rey, he did JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT of questioning. he feels good about his life choices at this point in time (for some reason). he goes with her through the door, looping one arm through hers just to sell ... the illusion he's created here. he and rey are just gonna go back to his car for round two. don't worry about it. he's not the one who gets afraid.

what he is doing is trying to supress the urge to be a dick to hux. it's so easy. he makes it too easy. ]

Maybe we can all go to Denny's after this.

[ She laughs, looking back at Hux as soon as he's nearly out of the room. ]

Sorry. I'll just be a second. [ And she slips back into the office, crouching behind the desk to grab it from underneath. She bangs the metal siding of the drawers and — ] Ow! Oops. [ To make it seem like her head while she's opening the drawer to slide the test back in.

Except she doesn't know where Poe got it from, so. Yeet. She puts it in A Folder. Then she grabs her bag, shuts the drawer, and heads back out. Hux just looks annoyed with her. She grabs immediately back onto Poe's arm when she's out, and Hux shuts out the lights and locks the door behind them.

Note to self: Hux has a key to Ren's office. ]

[ he snorts because yeah. he's the worst and he kind of knows it. whose lives have value? literally everyone else besides his. he was born without the fear gene and he will yeet himself out of existence for THE RESISTANCE and it would be worth it.

that was the previous sentiment, anyway. not the one he's clumsily trying to express to finn right now. ]

What I'm trying to say is that sometimes the stuff we fight for changes. Just because the stuff is smaller doesn't mean it's less important. And maybe that's what's more important to me right now. [ and just in case finn needs to have what he's already realized at this point that spelled out for him — ] You're important to me. And I'm not just gonna leave you.

[ so that's what's up with the bag. cool. poe is left standing with hux and just kind of rolls his shoulders like "girls. idk man. what are girls."

but poe is making a note of that, too. what kind of game of thrones drama. this isn't even the right thread for that. ]

[ that was a rough several days. sure, the knights were around to remind him that other people existed, but being alone in the silence with his thoughts is usually the opposite of where poe dameron would like to be at any given point in time. nothing but that for hours upon hours upon hours ... it's a lot. a lot of time to work through feeling depressed for letting the resistance down, and also worrying about how they would react to seeing him that way in the propaganda video. he hated it. he hated the not knowing even more.

compared to overthinking all of that punctuated with trying to sleep and waking up from nightmares, getting to get up and go for a walk was exhilarating. for a second, poe is almost — well, not happy, but he feels some sort of positive emotion towards seeing kylo ren just because she's a face that exists.

that is, until she starts talking. the balance of the universe is restored. he already knew hux's feelings about him, however. that's old hat. ]

I don't know why you're telling me that like it's good news.

[ it's news, he guesses. just not the news he wanted. ]

[ Hux fixes him with a withering look of disgust, which on Hux mostly looks like his usual pinched expression with which he regards everyone. Rey shrugs at him like, 'Fine. More for me.' She turns away and tugs Poe towards the lift. ]

I like Denny's.

It is good news. Surely the Resistance is pleased when they gain ground without having to take any lives? Why should it be different on this side? [ Oh, she can guess why he would think it different, but the First Order's goals -- formerly Snoke's -- were not her own. The First Order was a tool and she would wield it as she needed to, however if her control could spread without needing to resort to destruction? She had no qualms about that.

Turning around fully, Kylo leans back against the glass, lightly crossing her arms and one ankle crossing over the other. She regards the state he's in, for the moment putting aside the urge to take a thorough read of his surface thoughts. ]

I know the kind of good news you desire. I can even give you some. There have been no tips as to where the Resistance has gone. That won't remain the case for long, but at least for now they would seem to be safe.

[ It irritates her, just a little, to share that with him. So she shifts the topic. ]

What do you think of the ship? A bit too big for you to fly, I'm afraid. But you'll be getting to see it up close and personal soon.

[ he completely turns his attention to rey, like the only thing that truly matters is denny's. (and doesn't it, though? that's a mood.) ]

Are you supposed to feed that to dogs?

[ She's pretty sure you're not even supposed to feed most Denny's food to humans, but it's tasty and cheap, so she's not gonna think too hard about that. She glances over her shoulder towards Hux and finds him still staring at them. The sobriety fades out of her expression and she grins, giving a girlish wave before she and Poe disappear into the lift together.

The doors close and— ]

We almost died. Oh my god. He's going to tell Ren about this!

[ before he can elaborate on his dog's diet (of course he eats people food; he spoils bb as much as sandra bennet spoils mr. muggles), the doors are closed and rey is in full panic. which is understandable.

poe himself is not in full panic. but he kind of making a sour face, imbued with the knowledge that she's not wrong. ]

If Hux rats on us, we rat on Hux. I don't think Ren's gonna be happy to know that that shitbag was going through his emails. It's all about leverage.

Is there anyone in our college who actually likes each other?

[ Rey's thinking not at this point. Poe hates Ren and Hux. Hux hates Ren and Poe. Ren hates Hux and Poe. Maybe they should just all bang and get it over with. That sounds effective. Oh, god, getting rid of that mental picture is gonna be hard. ]

It's kind of a dark laugh. And silence follows it because she doesn't have anything for that. Then, when they get close to the bottom floor, she asks — ]

Do all of the professors have keys to the other offices in their pods?

[ poe is newly enthused like AH YES LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT. ]

No. He had to have made his own copy. So he could sneak in and do all the stuff we just watched him do.

Is that allowed? What other rooms does he have a key to?

[ She does not expect Poe to have these answers, but she wants to put the implications out into the world. ]

I don't know. But if he has the key to Ren's office, it wouldn't surprise me if he's got some others.

[ Rey says it protectively. She realizes she's still holding Poe's arm, and lets it go then. She tries not to make a thing of it, or the fact that up there was definitely her first kiss. ]

I don't think you should get involved in this Poe. I think … I think we should both keep our distance from Professor Ren, or we'll get caught up in whatever that was about.
