[since there's downtime while they're waiting for finn's condition to improve and, as sad as it is, life still must go on, poe decides to take rey on a little trip. it's been a minute since he's been back home to yavin 4 and he really wants to go to the family ranch and stock up on koyo fruit. he really fuckin loves koyo fruit okay, don't be judgy. and since rey seems very into things that are green and also food, he thinks she'll have a nice time. as he lands the ship and they start to get out, he announces:]

Well, this is it. Welcome to where I grew up. [they're basically surrounded by greenery and there's a mountain range in the distance. it's pretty sweet.]

[ after growing up in basically a barren wasteland, the worlds she's been to since this all started have been new and foreign to her. delightfully so. sometimes.

and when poe dameron offered to show her somewhere else, she leapt at the chance, desperate for the distraction, needing to stop thinking about how much things are changing, will change, how much pressure is on her shoulders.

when she climbs out of the ship, she looks around, looking very much like a child seeing something for the first time.] It's beautiful. [ her nose wrinkles.] The air is so... sticky. [ compared to the oppressively dry air of jakku, this place was downright humid.]

[ poe knows what's up; he wasn't expecting casanova skill from finn, so it's fine. it's perfect because it's exactly how he imagined it. it's rough and messy and he is living. the hand that was participating in handholding wrenches (delicately since it's his injured arm) free, because he wants to dedicate both hands to grabbing finn's face. the only thing he didn't expect is finn is … softer that he imagined? guess that's what happens when you live in that stormtrooper armor for so long. and then the whole bacta bag thing. whatever, it's nice. ]

[ fn-2187 was dragged from reconditioning in full armor, feeling like every part of his body had been scraped out raw. he didn't know how long he had to be there. they told him he wasn't permitted to ask, and he thought his tongue felt so heavy that he couldn't try to ask even if he were willing to disobey.

phasma stood him out in front of all the troops she had gathered, the way she used to single him out for praise after a simulation, and said you are all extensions of the supreme leader's will. disobedience will always be punished. you will always be brought back to where you belong. (he felt sick for a moment, couldn't define why.)

when she finished, she had him dumped into a holding cell without so much as another word. no assignments. no training. no information, no trust. some part of him, fn-2187 was sure, knew exactly what he did to earn it. that part, he couldn't touch. those thoughts were a minefield of visceral terror and pain, a labyrinth, and he knows even now that it must be for a good reason. he has no reason to doubt that.

he doesn't know how long he laid where they left him. he doesn't remember much between then and now at all, apart from vague impressions. alarms going off. being dragged down corridors, stripped of his armor. rebels, he knows now. rebels who go to the trouble of "saving" a stormtrooper only to be disappointed that they don't receive any gratitude.

they put him in a cell, too. they call it a room, and it's got light, it's got furniture, but he's not stupid. (there's a smell, for a moment, that pulls something sharp in his chest, almost makes his eyes water until he physically jerks away.) they want him watched, clearly. he's not allowed to leave. he's not allowed to have anything that could make a passable weapon. they can't be bothered to kill him and they won't let him have a way to fight.

they leave packaged food and water, seals intact, and he eats because they will slip up someday and give him the chance he needs. they set down a book that has a marker sticking out in the middle, where someone saved their place. fn-2187 kicks it once and lets it skid across the floor, desperately railing against whatever feeling twists around itself inside of him at the gesture. whatever these rebels are waiting for (and he saw it in the looks they all gave each other when they thought he wasn't looking), whatever they think they're gonna get, it's a waste of time and resources.

if they don't slip up, eventually they'll just decide to get it over with and get rid of him. he has to be ready for that, too.

he's confused more than angry. curious. he wants to understand what the goal is in all this, and even that much he thinks is a dangerous line of thought. the longer he's here, the worse it's gonna be for him when he finally finds his way back to the first order.

fn-2187 sits on the edge of the bed, straight-backed, and he waits, too. either for sleep to creep up on him or for the door to open again. ]

[they got finn. the first order took finn back, and poe was going to fix it. leia vetoed his plan, because although yes, it was horrible, finn is just one person, the resistance has like ten people now, and it wasn't worth risking more resistance members going in and most likely getting killed. it was just too much.

but it was finn.

so, in classic poe dameron fashion, he was like fuck it, we're doing it live. if rey can fedex herself to kylo ren and make it out in one piece, and finn and rose could sneak onto the supremacy and make it out (by… dumb luck???) he could do it, too, damn it. and also, it's impossible to talk him out of doing something once he's set his mind to it. this is a need to know plan that literally no one else needs to know.

except for maz kanata. now that they're on less of a time-crunch, maz isn't settling union disputes and can actually get him in. she finagles the whole thing. and probably also reiterated that this was not his brightest idea, but it fell on deaf ears. bye. what is so hard to understand about THIS IS FINN? finn saved his life and he's going to return the favor if it's the last thing he does.

so he made it in. because he's kind of a celebrity at this point (or at the very least, there's a probability that someone will be like "hey, wasn't that guy a prisoner on the finalizer that one time"), he steals a stormtrooper uniform instead of an officer uniform. it's very original trilogy.

maz hooked him up, tbh. he had the map of the ship, knows where he's supposed to go (with the assumption that they'd be keeping him in a holding cell). the code for the doors is trickier, because it's not like they're all the same. there's no guarantee which room finn is going to be in. so he has to spend some time being quiet and observational, trying to figure it out. see who's supposed to be giving out rations for the day. uhhhhh…. knock them out and hope they don't come to any time soon. go rescue finn.

[ the first weeks upon their return from hathaway's service had been ... rocky. snoke's death, and shortly thereafter luke skywalker's, had destabilized both the first order and the resistance. it was thrawn's guidance, not kylo ren, who had been the one to show them how to re-establish order.

as it turned out, kylo ren's ability for strategem capped out at "point every gun we have at that man." even rey could see the lack of wisdom in such a tactic.

from there, it had been easy to enlist her into the service of the first order. she had seen a need, and a power that if properly controlled might really do what thrawn had suggested it might. improve the galaxy. she knew little, yet, of politics and diplomacy, but she had the heart of a resistance fighter and the position of the now-deposed supreme leader ren and the prowess of her closest advisor, thrawn.

with these, she could do anything.

even bring poe, finn, and the remainder of the resistance to heel. they'd tried to turn against her, afraid that she had been lost to the promise of power. but she knew how to find them.

why, leia herself had been the one to give her directions.

the blue binary beacon blinks in the cold, dark space of the resistance base on crait. she has chased poe into it, let her stormtroopers wreak havoc on their friends. those who surrender won't be harmed. but there is, of course, the unlikelihood of their surrender.

she appeals to the one person who might still evoke it. ]

[ his time with hathaway had shaped him, maybe not necessarily for the better. it was harder with leia gone, the chain of command passing on to him solely by the nature of the chain being so small at this point. but he'd been doing his best, trying to make the right calls. not always succeeding. sometimes feeling like his hands were a little too dirty.

but it was okay, right? because it was for the bigger picture. this is what leia would have wanted. maybe if he told himself that enough times, it would be true.

despite whatever had come to pass, he still wanted to believe in rey. he couldn't give up; he was born without the giving up gene. and maybe, maybe if he could reach her ... she could turn. and everything would be okay. he could turn it around. the entire war. everything would be worth it, because he'd managed to do that much.]

[ this time... last week? maybe just like 4 days ago, it's hard to tell, on tfa: the a/b/o au version of getting drunk married in vegas if we're completely honest about it.

it's been a wild time lately. had sex in a storage room to appease biology's ultimate betrayal. wound up straight-up bonded, the full monty, the actual entire mating bond shebang, which finn wasn't really... against at all. it was right. immediately lost each other to supposed death, which was great and obviously also right, sure. reunited, had no time for a chat or a booty call. very nearly died for real, thanks kyle ron. reunited again, had no time for a significant chat or a booty call. nearly died again like. god, probably five times through all of tlj? between both of them. maybe more. something like that. rose kissed him??? it was awkward. luke skywalker showed up?? that shit just happened.

scratch "wild time." it's been a ridiculous time.

there's been a lot of bustle getting the resistance set up on the millennium falcon. resources to allocate, injuries to patch up, plans for where they're gonna go and what they need to do. eventually the well runs dry on what they can feasibly plan out. all they have left is time to wait to do any of it. and then finn, who has been ushered away from rose on the promise that she'll have eyes on her at all times, just kinda walking down a corridor, suddenly has the free second he needs to go oh shit we never even got to have a conversation.

finn also thinks something like "i have no idea how any of this works," followed belatedly by something like "do i know anything apart from his name and that he's a pilot and i like him and that i've seen him naked." he does not know anything apart from that. he's pretty sure that's not how that usually works? but what does he know.

anyway what up alpha, it's ya boi, here to get you alone finally. which is relieving, this prospect of getting poe alone and not being positive they're gonna get shot at, and finn's not gonna let himself look a gift relief in the mouth right now. ]

and he definitely didn't feel Super Weird about rose the whole time finn and rose were on their b-plot adventure because excuse you rose that's his. he's not being weird she's the weird one clearly. he should be grateful she decided to be extra af and save finn's life while he was busy trying to save everyone else's life and yet. and yet.

[ he sets the canteen aside so water doesn't get all over them in this attempt to make out. thoughts: he has them sometimes. with that out of the way, both his hands find their way into her hair, tangling their way in. he's an escalation of force and pressure once she seems down for more than one singular kiss — 0 to 100% in less than five seconds. he was so sad before, and now he has this good thing, this good feeling, this surge of warmth, and if he can just chase it and hold onto it then

[ Throwing herself headfirst into things is what Rey does tbh so now that it's happening, she's full speed ahead. Which is to say, she also wants to escape the sad feelings that are encroaching when thinking about the lack of joy and ease in her childhood.

Poe's the perfect distraction.

For a number of reasons, really. His warmth chases out the darkness, on the most obvious level, but he's also just … He's like a livewire. All energy and movement and excitement. And in that way, her attention can't drift because it's focused on him.

She whines in answer to the threading of his fingers through her hair and draws herself up so she can lay atop him more decisively. They're not so far apart in size, really, so her coltish body sprawls evenly across him. But she wrestles with herself to kind of, uh, stop it there because beyond this point is where things tend to get Weird. ]

[ No one thought Kylo had the capacity for patience, but it's just one of many things people were misjudging about her. It was expected, given certain... tantrums in the past. But one didn't survive the trials she had or possess the sorts of goals she had without being able to be patient. If one could simply snap their fingers and bring the galaxy to heel then her grandfather would have done so all those decades earlier.

It's patience -- to a degree -- that's kept her from snuffing out General Hux's obnoxious flame and put up with the attempts at undermining her new authority. Unfortunately, he's too useful to kill. She needs him to keep the First Order on track. However, she only has so much tolerance for the snide attitude and the implied digs at her ability to achieve any sort of victory. When he makes a backhanded comment during a strategy meeting about emotion blinding her to Skywalker's distraction on Crait, she's had enough.

Victory, hmm? She would show him victory. While the General was busy soaking in imagined self-importance, she would address one of the First Order's largest missteps.

Patience (and spite) lead her over several weeks to a trading post in the Outer Rim. It's off the beaten path, not somewhere the First Order had in its sights. She knows that's why her quarry sought out the location. An ambush is set up using locals who are easily paid for; they're purely a distraction for any other Resistance members traveling with the pilot.

When the fight erupts at the supply pick-up and everyone's favorite hero eventually makes a run for their ship, Kylo's waiting outside, blocking the path. There's no helmet this time to hide dark eyes that focus on Poe as soon as he's in her sights, or the ghost of a smirk that twitches one corner of her mouth upward before she speaks. ]

[ history repeats itself, it seems. that's how poe is feeling when he — or, his team, rather — gets ambushed, and he's left standing face to face with kylo ren. an unsettling deja vu.

he knows shooting at her is useless; he already learned that from their first encounter. the one that ended with him being taken prisoner. there's not a lot he can do against a force user. he's learned that lesson in many ways, most of them thanks to … you guessed it, kylo ren.

but who was he if he didn't try? he readies his useless blaster — it felt better than just standing there with his hands at his sides. made him feel like he had some kind of choice in everything, at least. if he was being taken prisoner again, he wasn't going quietly. ]

[ Technically speaking, Rey is not in his section. In fact, she's never seen him before in her life — a fact which she regrets immediately upon seeing him because he's the kind of person who's so beautiful that you're like how did I go my whole life without this shining angel's presence, but that's not really appropriate for

Poe's tutoring hours.

Office hours, after all, are for the professors. Poe is tucked into a study room that he has reserved for questions from people in his section of Intro Engineering. Rey is not in Intro Engineering. She took it two years ago as a freshman. Finn, however, has been really enjoying Poe's … class. Sure. That.

And it's on his recommendation that she's come here for an issue in her Astrophysics class. Finn had been so sure he'd be able — and willing — to help.

She's doubting that now. This is definitely asking too much. ]

Hi. Rey. [ She slips in the door and lets it thud shut to dampen the hushed collaboration in the stacks. ] You probably don't know me. [ Had Finn mentioned her? Or alerted Poe she was coming? With her luck, probably not. She hardly saw a reason he would. ]

[ should poe be a tutor? should he be a grad student instructor in the first place? well ... probably not. but, you know. his parents were/are really good friends with the dean so he gets carte blanche on a lot of things. gotten into so many fights, broken so many rules, and yet he's still here. somehow. ]

[ he smiles a smile that probably eliminates all question as to why finn enjoys "class" so much. yep. that. definitely probably his class. ]

[ The battle rages for what feels like forever. They bend but don't break, the front line holds steady, and finally... finally the tide changes. She can feel it in her bones, when the energy shifts and desperation rises in the other side. The fight isn't over but she knows how it will end, which side will stand victorious and watch the other flee. It might not be the last battle but if not such was coming close.

But with desperation came different risks. Cornered animals fought differently than confident ones. People became unpredictable and fearless when certain they were going to die.

Jasmine's in the thick of the fray, having abandoned her sniper's perch once the perimeter threats were taken out and the big guns damaged. She could do more good on the ground than picking the troopers off one by one, particularly once it became trickier to hit a foe without risking a friend. In the distance she can sense the Light and Dark fighting but she's not needed there. The Jedi's skills have grown sharp and Rey can handle Kylo Ren on her own, though Jasmine's fairly certain Finn is somewhere in the vicinity.

Suddenly, in the midst of a squad of stormtroopers, something rips through her like an icy shard right at her heart. The sensation is so strong and sudden it makes her drop to a knee, empty hand going to her chest like she needs to confirm there's not a physical wound there. It takes only a split second for the realization to hit -- ]

No... no no no...

[ Emotion surges within her and she releases it in a blast, a concussive wave of the Force taking out the troopers surrounding her. Before the last one hits the ground she's off and running. Following the thread of familiar energy that's built over weeks and months from conversations and emotions and hope.

That thread leads her around a destroyed transport and she catches a glimpse of his jacket before her eyes lock on the troopers closing in. Her power sends them flying, and her blaster takes out the one trying to get the drop on her from behind the transport. ]

Poe! Oh please, no... [ She's at his side in an instant, dropping to her knees in the dirt and immediately trying to see where he's hurt. Maybe it's not so bad. Maybe that pulse through the Force was just a warning to catch her attention. Oh, Jasmine hopes that's all it was. It's been so long since she's tried to heal she doesn't even know if she can anymore. ]

[ a part of him always assumed that when he died, it would be after being blown up in the vacuum of space. so fast he wouldn't even know what hit him (literally). wouldn't feel anything.

he wished he'd been right about that.

he never really considered what being hit with a blaster that wasn't set to stun was like, either. being stunned didn't feel great, but there wasn't much to feel before you went unconscious and, again, felt nothing at all.

there wasn't much blood, barely any blood. just a small blackened crater of an entry point in his side — blackened leather hiding a blackened shirt hiding a dampened but mostly cauterized wound. it didn't go clear through him, but maybe it would have felt better if it did. instead, the bolt went deep enough to create a mess of fused bone, muscle, and tissue before dissipating.

it HURTS. a lot. he's on the ground, he wants to scramble to a safer place, away from the fighting, but he can't. he's more busy fighting his own personal battle against going into shock. if he could focus, if he could pull it together for just one second —

suddenly, jasmine's hovering over him. she helps, a little bit. gives him something to focus on. a reason to fight through it. ]

Hey. Hey. [ shakily: ] Look, it's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay.

[ comforting others tends to be his first urge. ... but he'd never been a very good liar. nothing about him radiates "okay"; his skin is pale and clammy and his breath comes out in shudders. ]

[ When Snoke was killed, some thought it might be the end of the First Order. That the Supreme Leader's apprentice was too young and untested to take his place, let alone manage anything close to the dark master's domination. The thing was... Snoke thought that too, right up until the end. That his apprentice was so well-trained, so subservient, so easily manipulated that she was naught but a tool meant to be wielded by another. She might as well have been a Force-sensitive akk dog on a chain with how he spoke of her even when she was there in the room.

Except the thing about treating a person like that, about putting them through immense suffering and pain in the name of fostering greater power with the intent to eventually consume that power, was that one of two things tended to happen. Either the person became broken and truly submissive to their tormentor, as Snoke had so clearly believed -- or they became strong enough to fully embrace that coveted power, choosing instead to devour the hand that held them down for so long.

If Snoke had been a dark shroud, arid black smoke slowly stretching and seeking to poison the galaxy, Kylo Ren was a violent storm of howling wind and vicious lightning. The wind might clear the air of smoke, but the lightning struck indiscriminately and the rain beat down relentlessly to wash away barriers in its way. One could not fight a storm; only yield to its will, succumb to the elements, or pray for it to pass.

Following a battle in the Mid-Rim, the surviving Resistance fighters manage to jump to the safety of their yet-unfound base, but one little bird couldn't quite break free of the whipping winds.

On board the Finalizer, Kylo hops out of her fighter, brushing past the flight crew to stride toward the X-wing that had been snared in the battlecruiser's tractor beam. Whoever the unlucky pilot was, they were soon to pay for the fact any of the Resistance managed to escape the fight with their lives.

When her senses catch on a slightly familiar energy it makes her pause, head tilting curiously, and then a decidedly dark smile breaks across her face. ]

Well well, what do we have here... [ Kylo all but purrs as troopers step aside, allowing her to finally lay eyes on the pilot that nearly all in the fleet knew of. The thorn in their side. The one who got away, no thanks to a traitor within their own ranks (a cautionary tale, to be sure, that was spread often with the heavy threat of what happens to traitors). She of course knows him more intimately, and her mind is already leaping ahead to think of what wonderful torment she can put Poe through. ]

[ he knew it was bad. he miscalculated, reflexes not quite fast enough, and now he was snared by the first order. there was no way this was going to end well for him. he remembered being captured the first time. he only made it out alive by the grace of the force. lightning wasn't going to strike twice; he knew better than to hope for another finn. there was hope and then there was delusion, that thought belonged firmly in the latter category.

they already pulled him out of his x-wing. (he had a brilliant plan to detonate his ship with himself inside that didn't make it to fruition.) kylo just barely missed that whole ordeal. taking away his blaster didn't stop him from trying to fight with his fists ... and then one of the troopers stunned him. it probably would have been worse if there wasn't an implied idea that kylo ren was going to get dibs on whatever was going to happen to him next.

so yeah, no, lying on the ground feeling weirdly numb was not how he wanted him reunion with kylo ren to go (he would have rather not had one at all.) ]

That's the one thing they can all agree on. And Poe and Finn and Rose are all there to disparage him with her after she makes the decision to leave him, despite the fact that he'd mated her and leaving made her feel like a worthless, sorry excuse for an omega. Used. Worn out. Damaged.

She kept her hair down after that to hide the scars on her scent gland from where Ben had been anything but gentle the night he'd claimed her. The night she'd begged him too because they'd both been so, so lonely and they'd triggered each other's heat and rut respectively. It was a stupid impulsive mistake that she'd never be able to take back, but it was over with.

And she was dead set on not dwelling on the past.

She even manages to be happy for Finn when he admits that Poe had claimed him in the accidental heat of the moment, yeeting straight into mate status. Despite the fact that it was the same kind of issue that had caused her all her heartache, she can recognize that for Finn and Poe, it's a good thing. Great, even.

Fucking perfect.

If she's bitter, it's only because that means that the problem with Rey and her alpha lay not in the way they'd done it, not in impulsive decision making, but in who they were as people. (Who she is as a person.) (She's a waste of an omega and she always has been, stocky and coltish and —)

It's been three months and Poe and Finn are the fucking picture of the perfect alpha and omega as far as she can tell. Glowing. The bitter, failed omega in her hates them and hates herself for not being able to be them. But that's not really the problem. She can force that down — she's learned to. And she knows that she, as a person, a real individual and not her biology, is happy for them.

Until Poe's rut triggers her.

It shouldn't happen that way. She hasn't gone into a heat since she's been separated from her mate — something about how she's attuned to him now, and in the absence of him, she's as good as a beta. Rose had told her that, but then, Rose was a beta herself. They'd bonded.

But it does happen, despite all of that, and that's how Rey winds up in her room with slick dripping down the insides of her thighs, whining and feverish and thrusting her fingers into her to try and find some relief. To fail in finding some relief, just as she'd failed as an omega. Fuck Ben and fuck alphas and fuck her stupid biology and —

Rose comes by. She has ice for the bathtub, and eases Rey in to try and bring her body temperature down and help her ride it out. Rey makes her promise not to tell Finn and Poe. Four times. Four times she makes her promise, and Rose agrees.

Agrees, then leaves precisely to tell Finn and Poe. Because Rey is an idiot, that's why, and she should know better than expect her friends to force her to ride this out alone. ]

[ real tho. poe claimed finn, and then they weren't subtle about making their official mated facebook status known all over the resistance. sneaking around and coming back covered in bruises and bitemarks with stupid grins plastered on their faces. always smelling vaguely like each other. literally the least subtle. obnoxious enough to be annoying, even for people not in rey's salty shoes.

he knew even before rose came to tattle on her. the omega-in-heat smell would have been cloying enough on a normal day, but in rut it's x5000 times more intense. wandering around the halls looking for the pizza party kind of intense.

and just like he knew the whole Situation before rose went looking for them, he knows it's wrong. finn is his mate. finn is right there. AND, rey is also spoken for. he caught the scent of someone else on her when she showed up with the falcon. something like fire and smoke. he remembered it well enough from the finalizer to place it, but knew better than to say anything. that + one tiny glimpse at those scars, and he had a pretty good idea of what happened on rey's incredible journey from d'qar to achto to ??? to crait.

so yeah, rose coming to tell poe about rey's heat is like telling him that a house in on fire when he's in full fireman gear getting ready to yeet through the door. he been knew.

and even though it's wrong on all previously mentioned fronts, even though that tiny scrap of reason in him is telling him poe no, he can't not. they're magnets being pulled together.

his pants are uncomfortable even before he practically kicks down the door, looking feverish and sweaty himself. ]

Get out of the tub.

[ he is .005 seconds from manhandling her out of the tub, but that's his last little scrap of restraint drifting through the wind right there. ]

[ She's midway through a meeting with high command when something pricks the edge of her senses. It's similar to when the presence of someone she has a connection to suddenly comes into range, but not quite the same. Kylo tries to ignore it but it becomes a persistent distraction, an awareness bidding her to turn her attention elsewhere, to leave what she's doing and track down the source.

The sensation isn't entirely unfamiliar but she hasn't felt it in quite some time. Suppressants were standard issue in the fleet; missing a dose was unacceptable as it could jeopardize more lives than just the one who slipped up, particularly if heat or rut kicked in during a battle. Kylo had reluctantly taken them during her youth in an effort to temper her aggression -- more a result of the increasing call of the dark side than hormones, although the hormones certainly didn't help -- but they proved a wasted effort. Whether due to increased metabolism or simply something intrinsic within force-sensitives, suppressants bore little-to-no effect. It was simply something a Force user had to learn to control... or how to take the necessary precautions if they didn't have the strength of will.

Kylo considered it a blessing she had been born alpha, even if her Force-enhanced senses could make her painfully aware of the status of others. Early on Snoke had tried to convince her otherwise. Tried and failed horribly; if anything, the meddling only worsened her natural tendencies. With her mind now clearer in the wake of his death, so too was control of her instincts easier to come by, at least to a point. Instinct was instinct for a reason. She just didn't often have cause to worry about it when she was surrounded by people properly medicated or separated from the group when necessary.

But right now? Right now those instincts are demanding her to give notice, to the point that she's out the door the moment the meeting ends. If someone missed a dose there were teams to handle that, to locate the individual and sequester them appropriately. This doesn't need to be her concern. Except she kind of wants it to be. She wants to know who slipped up and punish them for putting those around them in danger. A ship full of thousands and where most are in close proximity to each other is not a good place for hormones to start kicking in.

She also wants to punish whomever it is because she can't take her annoyance out on the First Order's latest prisoner. Whether it was luck or skill, they had captured the Resistance pilot again a couple weeks ago, and Kylo was fully intent on not squandering the opportunity that presented itself. After suitably interrogating him and combing through his mind for vital Resistance information, he was going to be turned so the First Order could make use of his unique skills. A few of the generals -- Hux included -- were pushing for traditional reconditioning but Kylo wasn't convinced. Having been in the pilot's mind a few times now, she felt she could do a better job of 'reprogramming' him than what stormtrooper recruits were subjected to. Perhaps one more venture into his mind to root out any lingering secrets and then he would be ready...

Kylo stops suddenly in the corridor as realization hits her. It's not someone in the fleet that she's sensing. Smelling. It's someone who hasn't had access to suppressants because it didn't occur to anyone they might be necessary, and prisoners weren't generally afforded them anyway.

Cursing under her breath, she quickens her pace toward the holding cells. Officers were an unlikely concern but troopers and lesser staff weren't exactly known for the greatest willpower or strongest minds. Prisoners had been accidentally maimed or killed in the past due to similar circumstances. That was not going to happen to her prisoner.

Her prisoner? Kylo huffs out a breath and shakes her head, brushing aside the thought as she strides past patrols who barely have time to get out of her way. ]

[ poe basically started on suppressants from the moment he presented as an omega. he didn't feel like an omega (does anyone?). he didn't want any of it. no heats putting him out of commission for days on end, no being perceived as less than. he could just do his thing. pass as a beta, live out his piloting dreams, lead the resistance. the whole shebang. the resistance was all that mattered.

then he got caught. again. the first time was okay. it hadn't even been a whole day, and even counting being stranded on jakku after, he only missed one dose. not a big deal. it was fine.

but here, this second time, it's been weeks. maybe. probably. he's not 100% sure about the passage of time. it all blurred together. the despair over the resistance not having the manpower to rescue him mixed with the tension of being kept in holding for so long between the interrogation and clawing through his mind. a layer of guilt added to the despair over what they'd taken from him that he couldn't hold back.

at first he thought maybe it was something being inflicted on him. something the first order put in the food that was doing something to him. making him feverish, turning his insides into fire. it'd been so long, he'd forgotten what it was until he was far gone into the thick of it. no. no no no. this can't be happening. this is the worst place and the worst time for it to be happening, but he couldn't begin to think of anything he could do to hide or stop it. no, that was impossible, if he hid it, no alpha would come to fuck him and that thought was nigh unbearable.

no one had come to check on him yet, which made him feel relieved — he was a mess, dampness soaking through his pants and trying futilely to maneuver his restraints in a way that would let him at least unzip his pants and touch himself. on the other hand, being left alone was driving him crazy because if someone, anyone, would find him, then —

he can smell her. some distance away, but he can smell her, and it makes him close his eyes and breathe deep. her scent hadn't really registered to him before, not while on suppressants and screaming while she dug into his brain, but it's all he can smell now. like a cool rain. she's going to come. kylo's going to come and be his alpha, and everything is going to be okay. ]

Rey is helping Poe unload some crates from a recent supply run — three people have told her to just use the Force so far, but she's still hauling them in her arms — and across the hangar, there's Finn, chatting up Rose while she works on one of the damaged ships they'd salvaged. ]

Do you think Rose is in love with Finn?

[ Rey grew up in a backwards desert. Concepts like dating and relationship progression elude her. This isn't news. It's not even particularly groundbreaking — Connix had pointed out that it could just as easily have been omega biology as her upbringing in scarcity of love and affection. She'd done it trying to cheer Rey up, but it was really just one of those beta ways of saying that omegas were fucking strange. Great.

So when she sees Finn and Rose, she has only one way to process it. The same way she'd processed Kylo Ren's teeth in her neck: matematemate. And, well, anyone in half a mile of Poe could smell the jealousy on him. ]

[ As it turns out, keeping a few dozen headstrong idiots on a single light freighter is a recipe for high tension and disaster. There are holes in Rey's story about what happened between when she went looking for Luke Skywalker and when she arrived (with him?) back at the Resistance, holes that she doesn't want to address but Poe and Leia keep poking at, particularly following the news that Supreme Leader Snoke had been disposed.

Rather, the confirmation. It had, after all, been none other than Kylo Ren leading the charge on Crait.

So they bicker. This Resistance hero she's admired, Poe Dameron, who Finn looks up to like a savior, gets on Rey's nerves in a bad way, makes her business his business, and she can't escape him. He's pushy. He's blunt. He's a little reckless in how he steers the Falcon, too, which makes her savagely protective.

In other words, he's just too much like her.

'Look at those sparks fly,' Rose said wistfully one day when Rey stomped out of the galley after a snapped exchange with Poe. ]

[ Rose laughed and said, 'Well, he likes you.'

Finn didn't seem to know what to say, except that he looked vaguely unnerved by Rose's definition of 'like.' There was no disguising why, really. ]

[ But the seed is planted, and the rumor grows from it: that Commander Dameron and the Last Jedi are necking in corners and trying to keep their relationship a secret. It mounts until one day, when they've hunkered down in a base, Rey does seize him by the front of his flightsuit and drag him into a corner, but not to kiss him. ]

[ this week on lifetime: sometimes it turns out that two aggressively opinionated people don't get along and fall in love on that basis at all.

let it be known that he, for one, was not expecting being yanked and pulled into a corner to end in a romantic encounter in the first place. besides rey's tendency toward being brash and insisting on fighting him on any command decision that she was privy to, he was still suspicious about what had happened on the surpremacy. leia hadn't pushed a full on interrogation (even though he may have suggested it once behind closed doors when he was getting a little too hard on his bullshit), but he still had his own Bad Feeling about This and the bad feeling was re: rey and kylo ren's facebook status.

and if he couldn't trust her to sign off on "kylo ren is a bad person," then how could he trust her on anything? that's just black and white world views 101.

[ the trouble started when one of the first order's designated vampire juice boxes, i.e., finn, escaped. he helped poe escape when he was captured and being grilled about leia-- leader of the werewolf pack-- 's plans, so poe took him with him. and gave him a name.

but now he's back again. ish. in first order territory and cornered in the wreckage of his totaled car. his wounds are mending, but it's still hard to escape the way the metal parts have crunched and realigned themselves. getting out seems dangerous when it's kylo ren that's cornered him. ]

[ Things had become interesting since that unexpected claim had been made some weeks ago. No one would question their very-alpha leader taking an omega to tend to the needs every alpha had. Several in the fleet would happily offer themselves to serve in such a role.

However, the fact it was a prisoner of war that she laid claim to — the Resistance commander that had been such a thorn in the First Order's side, at that — caused more than a few raised eyebrows.

Did Kylo care? No. Did anyone make much of a fuss? Not after she killed the first dissenting voice who thought it pertinent to continue with the plan to recondition the pilot. (Sadly that voice hadn't been Hux, if only because someone else managed to get a word out first.) Kylo made it exceedingly clear that "the prisoner" would not be going anywhere but he also was not going to be reconditioned, or tortured further, or continue to be kept in a cell. What she didn't share was the fact she'd done more than simply temporarily claim Poe, mostly so a certain someone wouldn't use such information against her, but also a little bit because she was still coming to terms with that herself.



As soon as Kylo returns from inspecting the fleet's newest dreadnought she knows something is awry. It's not a feeling she can put a name to, though she could probably chalk it up to a mix of Force intuition and her instincts.

Her brows furrow in concentration as she tries to sort out what's wrong, interrupting the officer who's giving her a status update. ]

Where's Dameron? [ Not 'the prisoner', she hasn't called him that in some time, even if it's arguably what he remains, on some level.

The officer swallows as there's a shift in their presence that immediately makes Kylo tense, but they answer her question before her hand twitches. ]

"There was an altercation during your absence."

Where. Is. He?

"Holding cell 106-A. General Hux said —"

[ Kylo nearly kills the messenger as her arm shoots out and the officer drops the datapad in their hands as they immediately grasp at their throat. But a moment later her arm drops, as does the officer as they struggle to breathe, and Kylo storms off in a flurry of black toward the holding block. She swears she's going to strangle Hux with her bare hands. First things first though, she needs to make sure her mate Poe is okay. The very hint that he might not be both infuriates her and causes a slight feeling of guilt. ]

[ he hated it. even after the heat subsided, he hated feeling this connection to kylo. this bond. he'd never wanted to be claimed by anyone, not mated (was he pregnant? the idea had been exciting during the heat but now he'd rather die.)

— he didn't want to be mated, and here he was, getting soft. not being so scared of kylo. feeling… safe. wanting to please her. he was trying really hard to pretend that this was force brainwashing and not hormonal brainwashing; that way he didn't have to claim any responsibility.

that's why, despite knowing he was still very much a prisoner, he let himself get comfortable. complacent. he had his own room, not a cell. no more interrogation or torture.

until kylo left, and hux came skulking into his room. of course he did. he's an alpha, poe can smell it on him. it was surprising, but not, in some ways. (maybe being ranked below kylo was why he seemed so aggressively insecure.)

he came because everybody knows, it dawns on him. there aren't any suppressants in his system anymore, he'd been in heat, there's no way to pass off as anything besides what he is — an omega. judging by way hux approaches, grabs at him, there seems to be an assumption on his behalf that that makes him a first order fucktoy to pass around. (or maybe hux was just being petty and stealing kylo ren's toys while she was gone — that sounded on point for him.)

at least he'd had the presence of mind — even with hux trying to pin him down and nose at that spot on his neck — to deck him. sure, he immediately regretted it after the sharp pain hit his knuckles, but it was still worth it. even after being shuffled back into a cell with no treatment for his hand, it was worth it.

a surge of something rises up in his throat when he picks up her scent and footsteps. (relief. it's relief.) but he doesn't dare move for the door or call out — mostly because he's physically unable to do the first. ]

[ clary fray is not a very large person. she's short, first of all — all of five five on a good day, maybe give or take a few inches if her boots du jour happen to include a little lift at the heel — but perhaps more relevant to the current scenario, she's not a very big person. the concept of "be the bigger person" is often lost on her when it comes to personal grudges. if there was an olympic medal for holding grudges and pouting, she'd win gold every time.

which is why, by the time poe dameron darkens the doorway of the new york institute, he's greeted by the unmistakable sounds of hushed conversation and even quieter whispers. it doesn't take much to spread gossip, but when a certain redhead starts stomping around, slamming doors and grumbling... well, there's usually only so many ways the blame can point. and since nobody's come in mortally wounded or dead, it's probably poe's fault. he has a talent at getting under her skin that the rest of the institute could only dream of.

so, you know. find a girl currently beating the shit out of a training dummy, sweat dripping down her forehead and irritation evident in every line of her body. ]

Abby? [ the training dummy does not talk back, but clary berates it anyway. ] Whomst the actual fuck is Abby?
