[[ because we don't have enough, right? x.x I'm sorry, the scene popped in my head out of the blue while driving and I didn't want it to go to waste. totally content for this to sit in the backlog until whenever or to gather dust. <3 ]]

[ The battle rages for what feels like forever. They bend but don't break, the front line holds steady, and finally... finally the tide changes. She can feel it in her bones, when the energy shifts and desperation rises in the other side. The fight isn't over but she knows how it will end, which side will stand victorious and watch the other flee. It might not be the last battle but if not such was coming close.

But with desperation came different risks. Cornered animals fought differently than confident ones. People became unpredictable and fearless when certain they were going to die.

Jasmine's in the thick of the fray, having abandoned her sniper's perch once the perimeter threats were taken out and the big guns damaged. She could do more good on the ground than picking the troopers off one by one, particularly once it became trickier to hit a foe without risking a friend. In the distance she can sense the Light and Dark fighting but she's not needed there. The Jedi's skills have grown sharp and Rey can handle Kylo Ren on her own, though Jasmine's fairly certain Finn is somewhere in the vicinity.

Suddenly, in the midst of a squad of stormtroopers, something rips through her like an icy shard right at her heart. The sensation is so strong and sudden it makes her drop to a knee, empty hand going to her chest like she needs to confirm there's not a physical wound there. It takes only a split second for the realization to hit -- ]

No... no no no...

[ Emotion surges within her and she releases it in a blast, a concussive wave of the Force taking out the troopers surrounding her. Before the last one hits the ground she's off and running. Following the thread of familiar energy that's built over weeks and months from conversations and emotions and hope.

That thread leads her around a destroyed transport and she catches a glimpse of his jacket before her eyes lock on the troopers closing in. Her power sends them flying, and her blaster takes out the one trying to get the drop on her from behind the transport. ]

Poe! Oh please, no... [ She's at his side in an instant, dropping to her knees in the dirt and immediately trying to see where he's hurt. Maybe it's not so bad. Maybe that pulse through the Force was just a warning to catch her attention. Oh, Jasmine hopes that's all it was. It's been so long since she's tried to heal she doesn't even know if she can anymore. ]

[ gets salty about kylo ren benefiting from nepotism ... is also benefiting from nepotism. it's the circle of life and it moves us all. ]

Then he won't. I'll take the fall for you. I won't name names. It's not like what he's doing is right, either.

[ poe elizabeth "i just met you but i'm ready to die (academically) for you" dameron. ]

[ She doesn't like this. Nope. Doesn't like this oNE BIT. Rey wants to earn what she's got. But that's the thing, right? She is earning it, and Professor bloody Ren is denying her it anyway. He's the one in the wrong.

Poe has convinced her of this. He's a menace. He has to be stopped. ]

If we were going to steal his answer key … how would we do it?

[ a part of him always assumed that when he died, it would be after being blown up in the vacuum of space. so fast he wouldn't even know what hit him (literally). wouldn't feel anything.

he wished he'd been right about that.

he never really considered what being hit with a blaster that wasn't set to stun was like, either. being stunned didn't feel great, but there wasn't much to feel before you went unconscious and, again, felt nothing at all.

there wasn't much blood, barely any blood. just a small blackened crater of an entry point in his side — blackened leather hiding a blackened shirt hiding a dampened but mostly cauterized wound. it didn't go clear through him, but maybe it would have felt better if it did. instead, the bolt went deep enough to create a mess of fused bone, muscle, and tissue before dissipating.

it HURTS. a lot. he's on the ground, he wants to scramble to a safer place, away from the fighting, but he can't. he's more busy fighting his own personal battle against going into shock. if he could focus, if he could pull it together for just one second —

suddenly, jasmine's hovering over him. she helps, a little bit. gives him something to focus on. a reason to fight through it. ]

Hey. Hey. [ shakily: ] Look, it's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay.

[ comforting others tends to be his first urge. ... but he'd never been a very good liar. nothing about him radiates "okay"; his skin is pale and clammy and his breath comes out in shudders. ]

[ good. he needs everyone on his team of ren is literally a menace and needs to be stopped. ]

It'll be in his office. Just gotta wait for him to be gone, make a copy, then get out of there. You know how to pick locks?

Sure. I can get on his laptop too, if they're there, but ...

[ That's not a normal skill for people to have, but maybe Poe won't notice on account of being the one who … insinuated she should have it anyway. ]

When should we do it?

[ so smart. why isn't he that smart? don't answer that probably. he still thinks it's 1996. ]

It's impossible for the building to ever to be completely empty, because of night classes, but I don't think he stays that late. I bet we could do it tonight.

[ I mean, she's not. She has a work shift. But she's going to make herself free if it's to steal the answers to the midterm. Poe seems to eager and he might change his mind and —

Ugh, he probably should change his mind. She sighs. ]

Poe, you don't have to do this.

I'm going to. Anything I can do to make things just a little bit unpleasant for him, I'm gonna do. Even if it's something as small as forcing him to give someone a perfect score. [ realizing that maybe he seems a little TOO eager, he tries to provide context with ] It's — we go back. We have a history.

[ Is Finn going to be mad that she got a date with his hot TA to steal answers from her professor's office? Probably. This is like the worst wingmanship to date. ]

[ "i won't" is a sentiment that covers everything she's throwing on the table for him, essentially. he won't learn to see things differently, he won't rest up, he won't like what hux is planning for him. just one big "i won't."

he tries to sit straight, tries to be all anger and defiance. if he tried hard enough, maybe he could hold on to his anger to keep him warm. it would keep the cold from seeping in. not the physical cold so much as a cold dread regarding what was going to happen next. just because it wasn't as bad as having his thoughts rifled through, didn't mean he was looking forward to it. ]

[ he sort of squints like wait ... what? was that supposed to sound weirdly sexual? she knows that he's into finn, right? or at least that finn is into him? was there some kind of verbal or nonverbal communication happening there?

no, it's okay. maybe he's overthinking it. finn would be happy he helped rey and also he can get some sort of spiteful petty revenge on kylo ren. those are the important things. ]

Yeah, uh. Sure. Do you want to ... how late are you willing to meet up?

[ It's a Tifa tag it just comes out sounding sexual whether I mean it to or not. ]

The later the better, by the sound of it. [ She'd have to get her shift at the bar covered either way. ] Midnight? Everyone's probably cleared out by then, right? [ Even the janitorial staff probably. Finn didn't work that building, but he'd never worked later than ten in the Comms building. ]

[ finn narrows his eyes while poe is thinking about it. he's in this for the legit answer okay, that's what he has. ]

I care more about what you're gonna do than what you already did. But I guess it says something that you're not dead. [ poe has a point and it's a good one. the worrying will not cease. ofc poe's worrying also won't cease, he's pretty sure. so like. at least they're gonna break even on it. ]

[ yeah that checks out. ]

Yeah. I think that's good. We can meet at his office. [ he nods to himself. this is a good plan that he just came up with. yep. he's so smart and good at plans.

he wants to be like HEY MAYBE YOU COULD BRING FINN but adding more people seems like a good way to get caught. so maybe not that. but he will plan to be "really tired" and ask to crash at rey and finn's. get some of that finn going to use the bathroom in the middle of the night in his underwear action. the best reward. ]

[ She pulls off a corner of her notebook and scribbles something down on it. ]

Finn and I live on campus, so you can just come by and grab me when he's gone. Does that work? We're in Falcon Hall. [ The well-known shittiest fucking dorm on campus. Are you sure you want to crash there? (It's worth it for that booty.) ] There's the number.

[ Beat. ]

Unless — [ Beat 2: Electric Boogaloo. ] It won't be weird, will it? I know he's in your class.

Oh, uh, sure. No problem. I can come get you.

[ to be fair she could be like "so finn and i are living in my car" and he'd be like "make room in the backseat fam." that's the thirst levels here. he glances down at the paper and then pockets it. ]

Finn? [ i feel like he should be doing the thing where anime characters spaz out when someone mentions their crush. maybe he's doing it inside. ] No, no, it's great. I love — I'd love to see him. Around. [ in his underwear. ] We met before he was ever in my class, anyway. He kind of saved me.

[ Finn is in so much trouble now for leaving this part out. ]

What happened?

So, this is actually — [ it's a whole story. rey thought she was going to get it later but she's getting the whole story now. ]

I was doing my thesis defense. It was open to the public, right, so anyone could ask questions. And Ren was there, and he just starting grilling me. Which is the point, I know, but it was the way he did it. You know how he is. And he wouldn't stop. I was kind of losing my temper. I dunno what would've happened if Finn hadn't pulled the fire alarm. Not because — he was trying to get out of something else, but we ran into each other in the hallway. Like destiny or something.

[ A charmed, dreamy sort of smile spreads across Rey's face as she imagines this because it's just like a romance novel ? ?? ? Not that she reads that kind of garbage because that would be ridiculous but if she did (she does) this would definitely be straight out of the beginning of Bridget Jones' Diary and she's eating that shit up.

That's right. Rey "I traded food for stories about Luke Skywalker" of Jakku in this AU is a closet romance novel enthusiast because you can't tell me that her romantic fairytale-loving ass wouldn't be. Dropping my unpopular hot takes into this thread hard. ]

Ugh, he's the worst. [ She says this compassionately, then — ] Ren, obviously. Not Finn. Finn's … fantastic. You know our dorm's actually a single? [ A beat for effect, then Rey nods. ] I met Finn at freshman orientation. He was lost — he did the military first, you know, so he was crazy overwhelmed to be back at school. And when he found out I hadn't figured out housing yet, he invited me to stay with him.

[ it's all good i love it. the anime college au contains multitudes. ]

Oh, yeah. We talked about that, a little bit. The military thing. It's funny because I was actually in ROTC, you know? Before -- some stuff happened at my last school. It's not important.

[ he kind of pauses for a minute like should i keep going? maybe finn already told her about this??? nah he's gonna keep going. they have weird dramatic lives. this is anime, nothing is too ridiculous. ]

So, he wanted to leave campus, right, so we were driving away ... but then I had to go back to get something. I told him to wait in the car with my dog, and, uh ... you probably know how this part goes, huh.

That was your dog? [ Rey laughs as she puts her notebook away in her backpack. ] He's cute. Too clever for his own good, but cute.

[ It's an even better romance novel now. This is Must Love Dogs level shit. Rey is absolutely 100% definitely positively going to get them together. Which, as Emma has taught her, will not go poorly at all. ]

Yeah, that's him. Can't leave him alone for a second, he's always getting into everything.

[ he got real Soft for a minute there talking about finn, but now he's like "oh yeah. reality. reality is happening." he stands up from his lil table in the stacks because office hours are officially over now. no one else was coming anyway. he needs that spare time to doodle hearts in his diary probably. ]

Right. So ... I guess that's that. I'll see you in a little bit?

What I'm gonna do? What I'm —

[ he acts like he's about to get all offended and just into An Argument, but he's not. it's more like he's still trying to figure out what to do with these feelings he didn't think he was going to get in return for his own. but, honestly ... ]

I don't even know what I'm gonna do. I mean, I might go back. I should go back. But I don't know if I can.

[ another beat passes while his brain struggles to transfer his emotions into actual words. he is better at actions than words. you might thinks he's good at gay words, but that's only the "here's an inspirational speech to lift you up." he is less good at romantic declarations. ]

You know, my parents retired before the war was over. My mom kind of went with my dad. But with my dad, it wasn't so much that he wanted to. Han Solo got him honorably discharged. Because he was doing all this reckless, suicidal stuff on missions, right, and not thinking about how he had a family.

Not that — you're not — I'm not trying to — [ WHAT. ARE. WORDS. ] Do you get what I'm saying?

I'll change into something stealthy.

[ She pulls her bag onto her shoulder and excuses herself then, feeling a little odd about the interaction. Somehow she'd come here for study advice and walked away with … a heist plan. Poe Dameron was quite the character. Maybe not the best influence for her dear Finn, but … certainly charming despite it.

She picked up food for them both on the way back to the dorm. It was a cramped thing — two single beds shoved into a single bedroom designed for one, but at least it was one of the nicer single rooms in the dorm thanks to Finn's G.I. bill paying for it. (Nicer for Falcon Hall was still quite grungy.) It had its own bathroom and everything, but no privacy, and the paint was peeling off the walls.

Over dinner, she tells Finn that Poe's coming by later to help her with something, but not the particulars. He'd probably be morally obligated to tell someone about something like that. Finn has brought her a new romance novel from the bookstore-coffee shop where he was studying. It's cute.

They cuddle on his bunk and watch Netflix until midnight, at which point Finn has fallen asleep on his bunk with his laptop in his lap and Rey has to crawl away without waking him. That's when there's a knock at the door.

She's changed into all black — okay, all light gray because she didn't own anything black — when she opens it. The lights in the room are out. ]

Hey. Keep your voice down. [ She glances back to where the laptop light shows Finn's adorable sleepy face. ] Come on in.
