[ he got real Soft for a minute there talking about finn, but now he's like "oh yeah. reality. reality is happening." he stands up from his lil table in the stacks because office hours are officially over now. no one else was coming anyway. he needs that spare time to doodle hearts in his diary probably. ]
Right. So ... I guess that's that. I'll see you in a little bit?

[ She pulls her bag onto her shoulder and excuses herself then, feeling a little odd about the interaction. Somehow she'd come here for study advice and walked away with … a heist plan. Poe Dameron was quite the character. Maybe not the best influence for her dear Finn, but … certainly charming despite it.
She picked up food for them both on the way back to the dorm. It was a cramped thing — two single beds shoved into a single bedroom designed for one, but at least it was one of the nicer single rooms in the dorm thanks to Finn's G.I. bill paying for it. (Nicer for Falcon Hall was still quite grungy.) It had its own bathroom and everything, but no privacy, and the paint was peeling off the walls.
Over dinner, she tells Finn that Poe's coming by later to help her with something, but not the particulars. He'd probably be morally obligated to tell someone about something like that. Finn has brought her a new romance novel from the bookstore-coffee shop where he was studying. It's cute.
They cuddle on his bunk and watch Netflix until midnight, at which point Finn has fallen asleep on his bunk with his laptop in his lap and Rey has to crawl away without waking him. That's when there's a knock at the door.
She's changed into all black — okay, all light gray because she didn't own anything black — when she opens it. The lights in the room are out. ]
Hey. Keep your voice down. [ She glances back to where the laptop light shows Finn's adorable sleepy face. ] Come on in.
no subject
anyway, more thought was put into what he was planning on wearing tonight (all black but including a leather jacket because obviously) than how they were going to pull off this whole heist thing. thinking ahead: not one of his strong suits. not even once.
he probably does the romcom thing where he stands outside the door thinking about his life and his choices for a few minutes before he actually knocks.
and she's … inviting him in? was this part of the plan? not that he's complaining. he can see finn over there sleeping with his laptop out and it makes his kokoro skip a beat. ]
Are you sure you wanna do this in —
[ before he can even finish that sentence, there's bb-8. dodging between his legs and rubbing himself against rey like hello new best friend i love you so much hi you're my mom.
poe's defense for this is: ]
Sorry, he wanted to come.
no subject
[ Despite this, Rey holds her hands out because it's not Beebee's fault that his dad is a big dumbass who doesn't understand how heists work, is it? No it's not. Belly scratches !!!! She grins down at him, then pats him on the butt like ok we're done.
Until he heads for Finn's bed, and then she scoops him up under his ADORABLE FLUFFY BELLY and puts him in Poe's arms. ]
I just have to grab a few things.
[ She heads into the attached bathroom, and there's some blind rustling because there are still no lights on in this place except that laptop. At this point the noise level is like ? ? ?? Probably on the verge of waking Finn up anyway but somehow he's still out.
Confirmed: AU Finn does not suffer PTSD. Or at least sounds aren't triggers. ]
no subject
but also he's not going to say no to holding his dog, so this is fine. it gives him something to do while rey is doing who knows what in the bathroom. holding bb-8, looking at finn. psychically telling bb-8 that that's gonna be his other dad someday. scoping out the softest part of the floor that he's going to be laying on tonight.
after that fun few seconds, he whispers in the general direction of the bathroom:]
How many things is a few?
no subject
Enough.
[ When you get hungry mid-heist, you're gonna be glad she brought snacks, bitch. ]
Ready. Do you want to leave Beebee here? Finn will keep him company.
no subject
Really? I think he could help. ... He could be a distraction.
[ bb squirms to lick poe's face with the awareness that he is the topic of discussion. he's a smart dog. ]
no subject
[ Coal mines? No? She surges onward. ]
He'll leave hair. I doubt Professor Ren brings a dog to his office.
no subject
All right, all right. C'mon.
[ he will just lead the way outside, then. i feel like his car has to be something ridiculous like a modded out black and orange ferrari. like, he lives in a shitty ass grad student apartment and eats ramen noodles for most of his meals but it doesn't matter because he has a sick as fuck car. priorities: he has them. just in case there was any doubt to whose car this is, he unlocks that mofo and slides on in the driver's seat. ]
no subject
What is that?
[ She starts walking around it like ?!?!?? This is ? ?? the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life ?? ? ? ]
Is this your car? [ Then, ] You put BeeBee-Ate in this?!
no subject
Yeah! He likes to sit shotgun. [ like this is??? fucking normal???? ] It's — don't get me wrong, I saved up for this. I wanted this car. It's the most — it's awesome, isn't it? You gotta feel how it rides. It's so smooth.
no subject
You have to let me take a look under the hood sometime.
[ She climbs into the passenger seat and opens the glovebox to start digging around in the manual and read up on its specs. ]
What do you mean you 'saved up for it'? Normal people can't save for something like this, Poe. You know that, right?
no subject
[ you can tell he's really trying to avoid small violin territory with ] You can totally look under the hood sometime. Are you — Finn didn't tell me that.
no subject
[ She doesn't sound especially piteous of her situation, despite how pathetic it sounds. Like maybe someone should point out to her that most people don't … pay rent … by doing illegal slave labor for their foster parents' business … But nope. Here she is, resigned. ]
Wow. [ She keeps flipping through the manual, then sets it aside to look around the cabin. ] This has everything.
no subject
Oh. I'm sorry. I don't want you to get the wrong idea. Like, this is pretty much the only nice thing I have. And even — well, you'll see if you look under the hood. Parts are expensive, right? So when things give out, I've had to make ... some substitutions. Hasn't blown up on me yet, though.
[ THE MOST REASSURING WORDS as they are going on down the road. what a smooth ride that may also be a ticking timebomb. ]
no subject
Even when she brushed shoulders with it, it was with the university staff and then they were always … Well, Ren. Or, just as often, her peers who dismissed her as a part of some scholarship quota and not as someone who deserved to be in their company or who had ideas and potential just as valid as theirs.
Wealthy nice people ?? ? Impossible. ]
I'm just surprised. That's all. [ She looks over at him finally. ] Sorry. I'm being weird.
no subject
[ he chuckles a little bit, trying to maintain his Cool Persona but almost sort of nervous because THIS IS FINN'S BEST FRIEND AND HE BETTER MAKE A GOOD IMPRESSION because otherwise she might not let him sleep on their floor??? ]
Do you have a car?
[ nailed it. ]
no subject
[ Rey admits this sheepishly. ]
Actually, when I told you to come by, I thought we'd be walking. [ She didn't even think about how a phD student probably has a car and an off-campus apartment and a parking lot permit and stuff. ] I did learn how to drive, though, on the cars I repaired.
no subject
[ trying to think of words to say. things that aren't dramatic gestures but that's really the only language he knows how to communicate in. look at them, sitting here about to commit a heist. he set the tone of their friendship right away. no, it's okay. he can veer away from that. and not ... fucking offer to find a car for her or something. ]
Huh. My mom taught me how to drive. I mean, way before I was even close to old enough. Like, I couldn't even reach anything, but she'd put me in her lap and let me put my hands on the wheel.
no subject
Anyway, at least she's not focusing on her own miserable lack of family. ]
She sounds like the life of the party. No wonder you're so ready to break and enter and steal test answers.
no subject
Yeah, that's her. She was always — she was a lot, you know? Just kind of did whatever she wanted. So, yeah, she'd probably be in support of this whole thing. She'd probably actually say it serves Ren right.
[ since they're just driving across campus and not across ... the entire earth, they make it to the proper end of campus. does he have a parking lot permit that's next to the building where they're going??? of course not. and that would be suspicious anyway. just cut to somebody rolling through that security footage like i wonder what poe dameron's highly recognizable car is doing next to this building where he doesn't hold classes in the middle of the night. nothing weird or suspicious there. ]
no subject
Or, from a certain point of view, an architectural marvel that the engineering department is very proud of.
In a scramble, Rey unbuckles her seatbelt and gets out of the car, ducking under the scissor door and pulling the drawstring bag back up onto her shoulder. ]
Do you have an RFID to access the building with? [ Not to say she can't hack those, but it's harder and she might set off an alarm or something. ]
no subject
anyway, he's getting out of the car. it's fine. everything is fine. ]
Yeah, but do you think I should use it? I know I said I'd take the fall, but ...
[ but he doesn't want to take the fall making a dumb chump move, which he thinks is valid. ]
no subject
[ Rey heads towards the front door of the building with the sort of ceaseless confidence of someone who doesn't think there are cameras or that they're going to be stopped along the way by any inconveniences. The lights upstairs aren't even on, except for those which stay on all night just in case. ]
But if I mess up, it'll likely call campus security.
no subject
We can cross that bridge when we get to it. Make up some excuse, I don't know. You left something in the building, I wanted to help you but didn't have my badge. Something.
