[ Rey scowls at him, the look of someone who suspects backtracking. But it is … what she'd wanted to hear, ultimately. And he does look really sorry. So she softens a little, her lips tugging into something more neutral, more understanding. ]

[ Not arguments Rey is interested in, honestly, but arguments that she feels Poe better have answers for before she lets him touch Finn. ]

[ but then he frowns. because he is suddenly hit with the consequences of his actions. (as usual.) and it's only now that he realizes that impromptu kissing may have meant more to rey than it did to him. wow. he's the worst. ]

[ That's actually very gentlemanly — being willing to wait until Finn's passed his class this semester — and almost, almost counterbalances the fact that Poe kissed Finn's roommate. Poe stole her first kiss. To fool Hux. ]

[ She's immediately defensive. God, she shouldn't have even said anything. It's hitting her now. What kind of maladapt hasn't kissed someone by the time they're nineteen? She'd always been so lonely as a kid, never fitting in, and — But Poe wasn't like that. Poe was almost twice her age, by that Finn math, and obviously knows enough to put some thought and planning into this process of hooking up with Finn.

Maybe she's the only one out of her depth tonight. ]

[ he doesn't know what else to say at this juncture. he can't un-kiss her, if that's what she's upset about. continuing to talk about it probably won't make it any better.

finally, he gets to the process of unlocking the car and getting back inside. once he's sitting in the driver's seat, he tries to make amends in his own special way. ]

[ She hovers. On his side of the car, even, to make her hovering more apparent. ]

I'm not very hungry. [ Which, by Rey definition, means she must be sick and dying. ] You don't have to drive me back. It's nice out, anyway.

[ She feels weird about all of this. Is it wrong to feel weird about all of this? Poe had seen her using skills she had tried to escape in coming here, to commit an illegal act that could get her kicked out that she'd done on his promise that he'd take the fall, they'd found out that there was some weird Game of Thrones bullshit in the physics department, she'd confirmed Poe and Finn were totally going to get together, and Poe had kissed her.

There's a lot there. Like, a lot. She sort of needs to not people for a while. ]

[ he is visibly disappointed. like a scolded puppy. he was trying to do his best and make a good impression and feels very much like he biffed it. on multiple levels. like he fell down a flight of stairs and got knocked against multiple steps coming down.

as he starts to sink into disappointment that he's not even going to get the one thing he wanted out of this interaction — to sleep on their floor, for fuck's sake — he remembers something important. ]

[ An equally awkward admission. Rey shifts her weight uneasily. Then she walks around to the other side of his car and climbs in, staying painfully silent as she does. There's no good argument against it, though she certainly needs the break to clear her head. ]

[ not wanting to make things worse (like, she clearly wanted to get away from him because she didn't want to talk to him, perhaps because he is the shittiest human on earth), he leaves her to her silence. so that's. cool. a quiet awkward ride in a dope ass car. ]

[ Wow this is wildly uncomfortable. Rey doesn't even put her seatbelt on because moving feels uncomfortable. She wants to turn down the AC because she's freezing but touching any part of the car feels uncomfortable. This is getting out of hand. ]

It was my first. [ She explains when they're about halfway back to her place, keeping her eyes trained out the window. ] Kiss. I've never kissed anyone before. [ And it wasn't even real. ]

[ more awkward "oh"s. he takes a moment to turn this information over in his mind. ]

That was -- I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. But most people's first kisses are kind of ... bad? If it makes you feel better. It's like, a practice run. I could give you a better one though. If you wanted.

[ Well, he's not wrong. That's sort of what she's figuring out is that she was stupid for … making it into a thing. Like, the more you put something off like that, the more you hype it up for yourself and deny yourself the chance to learn more about it. It's kind of naive idealism, isn't it? [ he looks huffy. HOW DUMB DO YOU THINK HE IS. (don't answer that.)
