[ Surprisingly, there is nothing judgmental in her voice. But she searches his expression, trying to suss out whether to take his reply as defensiveness or something genuine. ]
It's alright if it is. You're putting a lot on the line for me; I could help you find something else.
no subject
Maybe a little. But it's ... you know, all this should be about you. You don't have to do that.
no subject
[ Rey reaches out to put a hand on his shoulder. ]
If this works out, it'll be because of you. I can't tell you how important staying in this school and keeping my scholarship is to me. It's everything I have.
[ No, literally. She is an orphan from a small town with bad prospects. She's not doing great if she gets caught. ]
Professor Ren almost took that from me. If you want to take something from him, I'm all for it.
[ Even if it means staying longer and increased risk of getting caught. (Never mind the fact that she already put his research back in the wrong place and opened his laptop so it can now record who failed to access it and take a picture of her the way anti-theft measures do. Never mind that they are already caught and just don't know it yet.) ]

and then
his gaze falls on the his work computer. the stupid macbook.
no. that was too much, wasn't it? that was some straight up sociopath behavior. (that's something ren would do.) and yet. AND YET. ]
No, I got a better idea. Let's brick it.
[ obviously he is talking about the macbook and not like. his dumb calligraphy set. poe's dark kermit is like LET'S BRICK HIS COMPUTER and his normal kermit is also like LET'S BRICK HIS COMPUTER. there is no moral compass here. ]
All his stuff's probably in the cloud anyway. If we can do it without throwing it out the window or something, it won't look like anybody did anything.
[ was all your stuff in the cloud when you bricked your own computer, poe? no. but get this: he doesn't care. ]
no subject
Could she do it? Obviously. Without even logging in, in fact. ]
Are you sure about this? If I dump it, there won't be any recovering it. What about his research?
no subject
[ he exhales a sigh through his nose while considering this. ]
Yeah, maybe ... is it too much? It's too much, isn't it.
no subject
[ Undoubtedly. But … ]
What do you think he'll do to retaliate? I mean, he'd have to assume it's you, right? With the way you two have been …
no subject
no subject
[ She pulls her hands off the laptop keyboard. ]
I don't want him to retaliate.
no subject
Do you have any ideas for that? Because if I had any ideas for that, I would've done them by now.
no subject
[ She goes back to the laptop and takes a few minutes to get herself logged into his account. She's surprisingly speedy at that. The desktop, as it turns out, is some kind of abstract art. Too abstract to be called impressionism, though it appears to insinuate a landscape in the same way — a dark landscape, though. Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here landscape.
She opens up a Spotlight search and plugs in the Dean's name to start scrolling through files that mention her. His employment contracts, obviously, are in there. Not much else. ]
How long has it been since they had their falling out? What was it about? [ She sounds too invested. She is too invested. ] I'm just saying, if he's blaming you for his bad relationship with his mother, then figuring out what went wrong there … It might help.
no subject
you can feel the mommy issues in this chili's tonight. ]
I told you most of what I know already. I don't know if there was ever a specific falling out. I think he kind of resented her for shipping him off to boarding school and like putting her work first, you know? But it's not like he tried to mend things with her after. After he graduated he went to live with his uncle. That went bad. But it's not like — he's never tried to ask her for help out or tried to come back home or anything like that. Like it's easier for him to just be bitter or something.
[ he kind of pauses and lets that hang in the air like is that enough?? was that too much? should i keep talking? whatever, might as well. ]
And then there's me. I went to a different school for undergrad. And I got into some trouble. It's — that's a long story. But there was gonna be a disciplinary hearing, I might've even gotten expelled. But she made sure I could transfer here and finish out senior year. Like, stuff like that. She always wants to help me. And maybe he's jealous of that? But he never wants help in the first place.
no subject
"Uncle"? Nothing.
She opens a Chrome window and scrolls through his email. Boring boring boring. His officemate Armitage Hux is in here plenty. Some woman named Phasma. Who the hell names their kid Phasma? She doesn't think on it too long. ]
Alright. I'll do it. [ She pulls open the Terminal. ] If that's what you really want, I'll do it.
[ Brick the laptop, that is. It's not hard. She'll barely break a sweat doing it. But she looks up at him, eyes wide and soft. She didn't like using her skills to help Plutt do bad-wrong things. She isn't going to like doing it for Poe, but at least Poe had earned it. Not demanded it. ]
no subject
shouldn't kylo ren be a better person in the first place so he wouldn't have to retaliate this way???
but ... man. he also doesn't like the way rey is giving him the sad eyes. why can't be just be a sociopath and go for it? why does he have a moral code?
wait, what's that? what does he hear? a whisper on the wind, whispering
YEET.]
Yeah. Do it.
no subject
It'll take a few minutes.
[ And she sets to typing on the laptop with some considerable purpose, engrossed in the task enough to not pursue further conversation. ]
no subject
What, no, do you think we shouldn't? I told you everything I know. What else do you think we should do?
[ it's not like pleading asking, more like PROVE ME WRONG asking. ]
no subject
[ Starting with validation. Yeah. ]
But if you want my honest opinion, this … This is stooping to his level, Poe.
no subject
Yeah. Yeah, you're right. [ he already knew it. ] Stop. Don't do it. ... Unless you already did.
no subject
[ She smiles, turning the laptop towards him. Still operational. She closes out of the terminal then, grateful that Poe had made the right choice. Relieved, even. She hadn't been trying to test him, exactly. It was just the way the world worked — everything was a little bit of a test. ]
How about I loosen a bolt or two in his chair and we call it a night?
no subject
[ phew. all that moralistic decision making sure was rough. he moves to hang back while rey does that, since she ... volunteered. and apparently has a tool kit in her lil drawstring bag. ]
no subject
This is a good time to point out that it sounds like someone is actually opening the RFID lock for the office pod by legitimate means. There's a single male voice chatting. ]
no subject
Forget it. [ his voice goes down to a hiss-whisper. ] Someone's coming.
[ well fuck. he glances around for options. they can't leave. maybe ... can they both fit under the desk? and hope that it's not actually ren coming to his fuckin office at one in the morning? then again, there's talking. presuming that it's not ren having a psychotic break (seems possible), they are about to have more than one problem to deal with. ]
no subject
They're barely under the table when the door opens.
'Yeah,' says a male voice that neither of them recognize. 'It's unlocked. It looks like he's been here working. He might still be in the building somewhere.'
Wait. Correction. Poe might recognize Armitage Hux. ]
no subject
and yes. he knows exactly who it is. that fuckin dick. u know what, this may be the only time in the history of life that poe is actually happy to see (well, hear) armitage hux. if it's hux (and ... unidentified second party? probably phasma), then at least they won't spend a lot of time snooping around the office. maybe if they just stay very still, the velociraptors (or cats) won't sense their movement and then they can yeet out of here. ]
no subject
'He should have considered that possibility before he acted like a cunt. If he thinks he can steal this from me, then he's as much a fool as his mother.'
Rey points to the copy of the test they'd acquired, which is dropped on the floor nearby. She reaches out to slowly drag it towards them. They still need to take pictures of it. This plan is half-finished. She'd planned to have more time. ]
